Regulatory and professional bodies within the Creative Media Sector
On 18th October 2008, Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross had made a prank call to Andrew Sachs on The Russell Brand Show. The pair left a voice message to sach relating to Russell Brand having a sexual relationship with Sach's grandaughter. After the show was broadcasted to the public, OFCOM recieved a number of complaints relating to the show and they made further investigations into the show and OFCOM found that the existing BBC guildlines should have been sufficient to prevent the incident. Later on after the investigation, OFCOM fined the BBC £150,000 and Jonathan Ross was suspended for 12 weeks without pay and lost his £12m contract with the BBC. But Russell Brand decided to resigned from the BBC.
I feel that this situation was handled well by OFCOM as this particular radio show was broadcasted during the daytime and content of the discussion was too explicit for that time of hour during the day as young children could of been listening to it. The pair also was very disrespectful towards Sachs publicly and they also desrespected Sach's grandaughter by calling her many hurtful names.
On the other hand, i personally think that there wasn't enough punishment towards BBC as the show was recorded, not live, they had plenty of time to axe the show so that Andrew Sachs and his family wouldn't of been publicly humiliated and the fined money was all of the tax payer's money so the public had to pay for the BBC, Brand and Ross' mistakes.
